Hewitt’s Wood – enhancing biodiversity and access

Hewitt’s Wood hosts a variety of habitats and one key area we are keen to restore is the pond network in order to attract wildlife and encourage species to flourish. The northern section of the site has a series of ponds fed and linked by a system of drainage ditches. Drainage of the ponds is poor and has resulted in water logging of surrounding ground. Through a program of desilting and drainage works the opportunity exists to maintain and in some cases enhance the floral and habitat diversity in and around the ponds.
In addition to the pond restoration works the Trust will undertake access improvements and boudary works to ensure the site provides the maximum benefit to the local community.
