Hollydale Open Space, Bromley – Island in a Lake Restoration (2712/DA)

The Lake with its central island was constructed when ‘Hollydale House’ was built, in the 18th Century.

The south end of the Island has been eroding due to wildfowl clambering on to it and the significant damage done by inappropriate human behaviour. The effect has been loss of plants on the island and at its margins and therefore loss of invertebrate diversity and food provision for foraging bats. This project aims to; restore native vegetation on and around the island to improve invertebrate numbers and diversity; secure the island from trespass through using native hedging plants and run Bat walks led by recently trained ‘Friends of Hollydale’ to increase awareness of bats; promote appropriate ‘Garden planting’ to support bats across the community; alleviate island erosion by surrounding the south end with coir rolls; ‘infill’ void between island and rolls with soil; plant rolls with locally sourced native marginal plants.
The Trust will contribute towards the restoration work.
