Holy Cross Church Yelling

Holy Cross Church Yelling is Grade II* listed with the north arcade surviving from 1180-90. The project aims to repair the main areas listed as essential in the most recent (2022) quinquennial report. This identified that the South Porch parapet and walls were cracking and other walls need re-pointing to prevent water damage. Stonework is eroding, window bars need cleaning and repainting plus some windows’ heads have cracked and need repointing or replacing.

The works include:
Exterior- repointing of East wall,South wall, coping stones and windows. North wall pointing together with buttresses and south porch repairs. Lining of gutters.
Interior-North aisle-raking out and pointing walls plus also four buttresses.West wall repointing and copings.Chancel repairs- raking out and pointing of walls plus three buttresses, North wall raking and repointing together with windows to west and east.
North Clerestory wall Sheltercoating repairs.

The Church is an important building for the community, as we are a small village. Villagers attend services at Christmas and Easter even If they don’t come regularly to the two Sunday services held each month. Harvest Festival and Remembrance services help us to make contributions to the wider community charities. We hold several fund raising events, such as the Plant Sale and the Flower Festival which are big village events.

We attract children to come into the Church for Christingle and the Easter egg hunt and whilst we would like to see more take part In services we are happy that they feel comfortable coming In to the building. Last year a Pet Service proved very popular especially as the local stables brought some of their horses along and they gave rides at the Fete.
