Horniman Museum and Gardens, Lewisham – Step-free Access and Interpretation for Nature Trail (008052)

The project aims to create a step-free access to the historic Horniman Nature Trail, creating a direct entry point to the trail from the Museum Gardens for the first time. This woodland trail stretches half a mile beside the Horniman Museum’s 16.5-acre Gardens, but many visitors are unaware of it due to its currently obscured and inconvenient entrance. The new entrance will be built next to a new nature-themed children’s play area and café. It will act as a gateway to this fantastic resource, where different habitats can be explored in a way that is mindful of local wildlife. Volunteers will help deliver an improved management plan for the Nature Trail, adding bat and bird boxes, controlling invasive species and nurturing protected species, and monitoring the biodiversity impacts.
More people will enjoy the benefits of connecting with nature, in a borough where many residents do not have access to private outdoor space.
