Improving Paths and Accessibility of The Tasting Garden

This project aims to resurface the pathways of The Tasting Garden, an orchard garden created by environmental artist Mark Dion in 1998. The garden contains heritage fruit trees and was designed as a critique of the mass production of food and its resulting species loss. Located within Lancaster’s cultural and historical quarter, The Tasting Garden is part of the Storey Gardens, adjacent to Lancaster Castle, the Priory, the Friends Meeting House, the Judges’ Lodgings, and the commercial centre. The gardens are well used, and the project has wide community support
The paths have become uneven and inaccessible to wheelchair users and those with pushchairs. Resurfacing the paths will provide a stable, low-maintenance surface that improves accessibility for all visitors, including people with wheelchairs, families, schoolchildren, local artists, residents, and wellbeing groups.
