Installation of an Outdoor Gym, Friends of Flatts Lane, Normanby, Middlesbrough

This is a project requested by many local people and visitors to the grounds within a much valued and cherished outdoor country park. Installation of an outdoor gym will provide many opportunities for people to take part in physical activity in the park. Health benefits, both physical and mental, will be of immense benefit to local residents and families of all ages. It will help reduce stress and with the play equipment previously funded by ECT, enhances and encourages families and people of all ages, genders, denominations and physical ability, to mix together and forge friendships. The park offers free parking and is available to everyone regardless of income. The outdoor gym will be of benefit to those who cannot afford play areas and sports venues for keeping fit and healthy.

Friends of Flatts Lane Country Park formed in 2007, set up by conservation volunteers wishing to have a more active role within the park. The country park is situated on the former site of Normanby Brickworks, adjacent to an urban area where several communities fall within the 10% nationally most deprived. The park is extremely valued place for all living locally, providing high quality activities for community benefit accessible for all ages and abilities. Visitors to the park have asked for an outdoor gym to replace the wooden ‘Trim Trail’ that was a very popular feature at the park. It was installed approximately 20 years ago but the condition of the equipment deteriorated over the years, and most pieces have now been removed as unserviceable. One of the biggest benefits of outdoor gyms is that they are free for the public to use, making fitness accessible to everyone.
Environmental considerations: The gym equipment will enhance the local environmental within the park and materials used, will be weather proof and up to safety standards. This will prevent constant renewal.

Hard to reach considerations: The project is free to all and with promotion on social media, local council website and an official opening promoted in both social and local media, the Friends group will reach the local population on Teesside. Guided walks within the park for community groups, local schools and the visitors centre will promote the gym.
