Installation of Laser Cut Corten Steel Fence and Gateway, Riverside Stourbridge Community Interest Company, Stourbridge

This is a project to fund the installation of a decorative but functional fence and entrance gate at Riverside House in Stourbridge.

A 14-meter-long laser-cut Corten steel fence and entrance gate have been designed and commissioned, supported by a manufacturing specification and engineering survey. This striking installation will serve as the entrance to the Grade II listed Riverside House, located directly in front of the Stourbridge Canal. The fence features intricate illustrations representing key aspects of the Riverside House project, including the arts, traditional crafts, ecology, heritage, and well-being, along with depictions of local wildlife.

This project continues the regeneration of a previously problematic and antisocial area of Stourbridge, enhancing the newly developed public open space while celebrating the area’s rich traditions, wildlife, and heritage. The installation will significantly improve accessibility, particularly for those with mobility challenges, and serve as the gateway to a planned cottage garden. This tranquil space will provide a place for rest and reflection for visitors walking along the canal towpath.

Environmental considerations: The laser used to cut steel, requires less power than traditional methods, making it a sustainable choice for manufacture. The Corten steel will be suitable to withstand weathering and is highly durable, with approximately 120-year life span. The steel fence will require no further coating, paint or finishing which could be harmful to the environment.

Hard to reach considerations: The organisation actively engages with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those with autism and learning disabilities, who participate in various land, craft, and art activities three days a week. These activities are supported by professional artists, craftspeople, and local volunteers. Social prescribing workshops are also delivered for individuals facing mental and physical health challenges. Additionally, partnerships with local specialist schools and colleges provide similar opportunities for engagement. The project will enhance accessibility to the site, benefiting the wider community as well as canal boating residents and visitors.
