Instrumentation & Monitoring of Shear Forces within Landfills (extension of existing projects 462216.008 and 009)

Extension of projects 462216.008 and 009.

Geomembranes are used in most UK landfills. In the context of steep sidewalls, geomembranes are potentially exposed to significant downdrag forces from settlement of the waste body, with risk of compromised functionality. This research seeks to investigate by means of long term monitoring a representative sidewall within an operational landfill cell.

Extension is required to existing projects, whose agreed duration runs until Sept 2006, to allow an additional 12 months of monitoring data to be captured. Results to date confirm that original design assumptions were justified. The extra 12 months data will increase value of research effort for minimal additional expenditure, the bulk of the project costs being involved in original design and set-up
