John Blenkinsop’s Tomb, Rothwell – Improvements

John Blenkinsop and Matthew Murray designed and built the world’s first commercial steam locomotive to haul coal from Middleton Colliery to Leeds Bridge. He died in 1831 and his tomb lies within Holy Trinity Churchyard, Rothwell.

Over the years, the tomb has become overgrown and it is now difficult for schools, railway enthusiasts and the local community to visit. The Rothwell & District Historical Society are keen to improve the tomb and its surroundings and the project will involve clearing the weeds and other debris, laying a weed control membrane, refilling with pea gravel and paving around the tomb.
