Jones’s Mill

The project will help to protect and improve this diverse and important SSSI, SAC habitat within Wiltshire. The site currently suffers from defused agricultural pollution, sediment and pond dam/wall failure which, if not addressed soon, will result in this precious habitat being lost for ever. Jones’s Mill is an area of fen vegetation, scrub and woodland. Historically the site was formerly managed as water meadow with some water-cress beds. The pattern of vegetation is complex with an intimate mixture of fen, willow-scrub, willow and alder carr. The calcareous nature of the water feeding the system is illustrated by the occurrence of species such as marsh valerian Valeriana dioica, flea sedge Carex pulicaris, marsh arrowgrass Triglochin palustris and southern marsh orchid Dactylorhiza praetermissa.
