Kirkburton Memorial Garden Centenary Project

The project aims to mark the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1 on Armistice Day 2018. A planted area on the site will be remodelled as a sculptural reference to the 100 years which have passed since the end of the First World War and the almost 100 local men who have given their lives for their country during and since that conflict began. One hundred shards of Kirkburton sandstone will stand shoulder to shoulder in tribute. They will be cemented and haunched covered with a black slate mulch. An LED uplight will be positioned on the grass facing the Memorial to provide illumination of both Memorial and shards on significant occasions. Over time the shards that we will be using have all fallen from the face of Town Quarry; they are provided free of charge; once ‘won’ from the quarry they will be carted to the site by the local scouts and volunteers.

The remaining element of the project is to use the remaining space by introducing an accessible path to the concrete ‘Howitzer Base’.
