Kirkdale Sawmill

The Sawmill lies within Kirkdale estate, which comprises a number of important Category A listed buildings. Built in the early 1800’s Kirkdale Sawmill is the only working water – driven sawmill left in the south of Scotland. Working until the 1970’s when it fell into dis-use, it was repaired and opened as a visitor attraction in 2005. A small quantity of local hardwoods are processed at the sawmill for local sale to assist with the maintenance costs of the sawmill. However, the drive shaft and part of the gearing mechanism now need to be replace in order to keep the sawmill operational.
