Kirklees Cafe & Friendship Hub Repairs

The aim of the project is to repair and improve the Honesty Café roof and associated structures to ensure the building is safe, weather‑resilient, and sustainable for long‑term community use. The works will address damage caused by water ingress, which has affected the side wall and canopy area due to historic limitations in construction funding and increasingly severe winter weather conditions.
The project will involve repairing the damaged side wall, strengthening and re‑forming the canopy roof between the café and pavilion, and introducing an appropriate roof pitch to prevent future structural failure. New guttering will be installed to improve rainwater management and protect the building fabric.
As part of the sustainability improvements, an additional IBC water container will be installed at the rear of the building to increase rainwater harvesting capacity. Collected water will be used to support the front community gardens, with the longer‑term aim of supplying water for eco‑friendly toilet flushing, reducing mains water use.
These improvements will safeguard an important community facility, ensuring it remains accessible, welcoming, and environmentally responsible. The project will enhance the café’s resilience to climate impacts, support community growing initiatives, and contribute to more sustainable resource use, allowing the space to be enjoyed by the local community for many years to come.
