Kirkless Wood, Wigan – Securing Access

Kirkless Wood in Wigan is 7.37 hectares (18 acres) of valuable native woodland. It provides freely accessible green space that can be accessed at all times on foot. Unauthorised motorbike access is causing considerable damage to the paths that provide routes through the wood and the existing habitat is suffering; as well as the woodland, with 1000m of informal grassy paths, the site contains meadow areas and a pond. This anti-social behaviour is spoiling the opportunity for recreation for others and we want to make the wood safer and enjoyable to visit. We request Viridor Credits support to install new boundary fencing and create two new pedestrian entrances. Together this will improve this natural amenity, making the wood more welcoming, accessible and safe, and a place where the community can enjoy quiet recreation. The fencing will also protect the existing habitat and enable the damaged ground to recover over time, encouraging flora that provides a valuable food source for invertebrates and birds.
