Lady Chapel Windows at St James, St James and St Paul PCC, Colchester

This project is for the urgent masonry repairs to the Flemish stained-glass windows in the Lady Chapel of St James the Great, Colchester. The windows are of significant artistic and historical interest in the Grade II* listed church and are in danger of falling out, causing damage or destruction of the glass and injury to visitors. The windows must be expertly removed and stored while the necessary masonry work is effected, then re-installed. The chapel offers a quiet area to visitors for peaceful contemplation, enhancing its reputation for offering pastoral as well as sacramental care. The crumbling masonry makes the windows dangerously loose, and the chapel may have to close to protect anyone from harm, both inside the chapel and outside. Set high on East Hill, Colchester, the church has been a significant local landmark for many centuries. The church welcomes many visitors, both local and far afield, as can be seen by the visitor’s book.
