Ladybird spider species recovery

This project will prevent the extinction, and maintain sustainable populations of one of the UK’s most iconic and endangered spiders. The Ladybird spider (Eresus sandaliatus) is at risk of extinction in the UK and as such is a UKBAP Priority Species, and is listed as a Section 41 species of principle importance in England. This spider was thought to be extinct in Britain for over 70 years until its rediscovery in 1980, since then no other populations have been found. Since 2000 eight new colonies have been established on other Dorset heathlands. Although largely experimental at first, translocation techniques have proved successful and are now well tested. The Ladybird spider conservation partnership has a target to establish four more populations by 2018. This project will introduce Ladybird spiders to two new sites at the Arne RSPB reserve, monitor the existing population, and undertake habitat management at the site.
