Lancaster Priory Community Gardens Project

We propose to develop a new community garden situated in Lancaster Priory Churchyard to create a new valuable public amenity space where visitors can enjoy open green space near the centre of town and Lancaster Castle. For some years the Churchyard was used for open-air events, such as the Georgian Festival, however, the lower area of the churchyard where we propose to develop the new facility is in a poor condition and this has led to a steep decline in its use, which has been exacerbated by vandalism, litter and weed problems. We believe that the Churchyard and its social history and heritage are integral to the story of Lancaster and its people; the gravestones and the stories they tell forming part of the landscape where people socialise and enjoy the beauty of the urban green space.
