Projects / Lapwing Recovery at Belfast Harbour Reserve

Lapwing Recovery at Belfast Harbour Reserve

The project aims to enhance the biodiversity at Belfast Habour Reserve (an ASSI and NCA ), improving conditions for lapwing, a priority species for conservation in Northern Ireland and throughout the UK.
The project aims to:
Undertake grass mowing of the grassland in the Nature Conservation Area and the grassland surrounding the harbour lagoon four times per year, keeping sward levels below 5 cms to provide optimum feeding and roosting conditions for lapwing and other waders and wildfowl.
Removal of Japanese knotweed and re-installation of a sluice pipe – because the lagoon is so shallow there is a real danger of these invasive species completley colonising the area, destroying the roosting and feeding areas which attract other birds to the lagoon.
