Projects / Latton Basin Phase 2

Latton Basin Phase 2

We will be continuing the work already carried out on and around the Historic Flood Relief Aqueduct and the other Historic Basin infrastructure. In spite of the erratic weather conditions we are reaching the aims of our 23/25 project and now need to build on these.
This includes the reinstatement of the two inner wingwalls and lock area, complete with a brick surface, improvements to site safety and the reconstruction of part of the towpath from the flood relief aqueduct to the river Churn bridge.
Improvement to the drainage surrounding the flood relief aqueduct and associated drainage channels, improvements in the towpath and fencing for the safety of volunteers and other users of the towpath from the local community. purchase coping stones for completion of the top of the west side of the aqueduct which is seen by the general public.
The inner walls of the Basin need to be repointed and damaged and missing stones replaced. The end of the basin near the Mill Leat needs realigning and the leaks from the Leat plugged to prevent water-logging of the Basin and damage to the stonework.
The post and rail fencing around the entrance to the site has been in place since 2006 and needs completely replacing for security and safety reasons. A lockable metal gate with metal support posts will be erected at the entrance to the worksite.
The welfare facilities for volunteers and visitors needs to be upgraded with the provision of a chemical toilet, washing facilities and replacement of existing personal protection equipment (PPE) on an ongoing basis.
The reeds, weeds and silt on either side of aqueduct need to be cleared to improve the flood water flow under the arches.
We need to provide additional information material about our activities both around the site and to wider audiences, by erecting appropriate signage boards, and purchasing a lightweight gazebo and associated display material for one-day events.
Our project continues to receive local support and is greatly appreciated We have attended local and national events and have given talks to the local community. We use our Web site, Facebook and a Newsletter to keep supporters informed.
We do not charge membership fees as we wish to be all-inclusive and welcome anybody interested in the project . Other than in exceptional circumstances all work is carried out by our volunteers, who meet all their own expenses, although we provide all necessary PPE.
The day-to-day running costs, which are minimal, are met by donations.
This is an ongoing project which was started in December 2005 simply with aim of clearing the site and has evolved into full restoration.
