Leafy Legacy: Preserving Kennington Park’s Trees for Future Generations

Kennington Park is the largest park in North Lambeth and holds important significance in the local area for the role it plays as a public green space. A key component of the park’s heritage significance are the many old trees throughout the park, which have huge environmental, aesthetic and historic value in the local area. Unfortunately, their condition is unknown and there currently isn’t a strategic plan to replace them. There are already significant gaps from trees lost in the park, which is only set to increase over the coming years.

Through this project, we aim to develop a strategic programme of tree planting by carrying out tree surveys with volunteers (including i-Tree Eco) of all the trees in the park to ascertain the existing condition of the trees. After analysing the results, we will kick start the legacy tree planting by planting 15 mixed-species trees with the local community in the winter of 2017/18.
