Light Gives Life wildlife corridor project

Severn Gorge Countryside Trust will run the ‘Light Gives Life’ wildlife corridor project with a primary aim to create new varied habitats to provide opportunity for wildlife to flourish and promote the wider economic and social benefits a healthy ecosystems offer. This will be achieved by creating edge habitat and enhancing wildlife corridors throughout six different sites within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

Large trees are casting heavy shade and reducing the biodiversity of the sites in question. Site Improvement works will be undertaken that will involve tree felling, coppicing, ride/ scrub management, with enrichment planting where needed.

3,039 metres of improved edge habitat will be created, and where enrichment planting is needed, trees will be planted by volunteers. The local provenance hazel whips planted will be coppiced on a 12-to-15-year rotation and used for our hedge-laying programme with local volunteers.
