Lime Kiln Conservation, Hobbs Nature Reserve Trust, Longhope, Glos

The objective of the project is to conserve the lime kiln within Hobbs Nature Reserve that was built as part of the quarrying operations dating back to the early 1800s.

The limekiln is situated adjacent to the main footpath located in the Hobbs Nature Reserve that has unrestricted public access 24 hours a day throughout the year. This is an integral part of the industrial history of the site dating back to the early 1800s when it was an active limestone quarry. The reserve is visited daily by residents. The reserve also receives numerous visitors, hikers passing through the reserve, and visitors specifically coming to view the unique geological structures that were exposed by the limestone quarrying. The site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the unique geological structures and is being managed in association with Natural England. The nature reserve is supported by the Longhope Parish Council who are corporate trustees of the Hobbs Nature Reserve Trust. The local junior school has also made visits to the reserve and a local children’s conservation group visit the site to explore the fossil records and the industrial history.

The nature reserve can be accessed with no payment required. It is well known in the local community being located between Longhope, Huntley and Mayhill, with a combined population of approximately 4,000. It is very popular with dog walkers, hikers on the Wysis Way foot path and joggers.
