Living Roofs for London’s Wildlife

A three year project to design and install 1500m2 of brownfield habitat/living roofs on six buildings in London. The project seeks to address targets for a new UK priority habitat, Open Mosaic Habitats on Previously Developed Land and the London Wasteland HAP. The completed roof would support a range of priority invertebrates.

The project will include baseline surveys of the area prior to installation, design and installation of 6 roofs using different substrate types, and post installation entomological and botanical surveys for three years, to measure change. The project includes a specific research element, to study rates of invertebrate and botanical colonisation of living roofs and foraging patterns, to investigate the relationship between different substrates and the invert life it supports.
