Loch Ruthven Nature Reserve

Loch Ruthven – designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) – is most famous for being the UK breeding stronghold of the spectacular, yet extremely rare Slavonian grebe which come to breed in the loch’s sedge beds. It alone accounts for 45% of their breeding population, making it by far the most important site for the species in the UK.
