Low Gillerthwaite Hydro-Electricity Project

Low Gillerthwaite provides low price hostel accommodation and class room facilities for schools, colleges, family groups and individual’s from within Cumbria and out of county.
The Centre has no mains electricity and currently generates all its power using a diesel generator, heating needs are met by running a Biomass boiler.
The installation of 2 turbines in the local beck (4kw for normal water conditions. 1kw for periods of low water flow) will provide all electricity for the centre for up to 50 weeks of the year.
In addition to providing green energy the turbines will be used as the focus of an education tool relating to energy and sustainability.
