Lower Spey Invasives

Invasive plant species such as Giant hogweed have become well-established along the banks of the lower River Spey and also along other watercourses such as the Tynet Burn. The project application seeks funding to allow the Spey Foundation to initiate control of Giant hogweed (GHW) in priority public access areas in the lower Spey.
Contact has been established with the two community councils downstream of Fochabers (Lennox and Innes) as both organisations have expressed concern about the spread of this plant within their areas. In consultation with the community councils, and other appropriate organisations, priority areas for control e.g. alongside popular paths, recreational areas or access points will be identified.
Control will be by spraying licenced herbicides by qualified persons at the appropriate time of year (April/May). A short report on activities will be completed and progress will be updated on Spey Foundation social media and website.
