Luddenden High Street, Diamond Jubilee In Bloom

Luddenden is a very small village in a side valley just off the main Calder Valley trunk route. The earliest settlement clustered about the ford in the valley bottom and grew up where the packhorse trail from Halifax into Lancashire came down from the hills to cross the Luddenden Brook. This early pattern of historical development has created a picturesque townscape – a tightly packed huddle of stone buildings (simple stone terraced cottages with mullioned windows) on a very narrow street around the bridge. The Luddenden Conservation Area was designated in 1973. Public space is at a premium in the village and In Bloom is the key project (won best Village at Britain in Bloom 2011).
