Projects / Lune Habitat Zone Extension Phase 1

Lune Habitat Zone Extension Phase 1

The primary aim of this project is to deliver significant elements of the Habitat Action Plan (HAP) for rivers and streams from the Cumbria Biodiversity Action Plan in the Upper Lune area. This will involve the erection of gates and fencing on Birk Beck to recreate riparian habitat zones and to protect these as they regenerate.
Habitat improvements will benefit the following species: water voles, Atlantic Salmon and White Clawed crayfish and otters. The riparian habitat zones are created by the project will also contribute to ongoing improvements in the water quality and hydrological performance of the catchments by:
Reducing inputs of agricultural run-off
Reducing inputs of eroded sediments
Arresting the rate of run-off rainwater into river channels.
Although directly there is no education element to this project, indirectly it will raise public awareness of the need to reduce efflucents, reduce domestic water consumption and dispose responsibly of damaging materials
