Maggie’s community garden

A major development is planned to increase the footprint of Maggie’s in Newcastle (buildings and outdoor space). This project is to significantly develop the outdoor space/community garden space for all to use and enjoy. The centre is one of the busiest Maggie’s in the UK; every day around 100 people visit the centre alone; on busy days they have received more than 250 visitors. The garden is open to the public and often discovered by those visiting the grounds of the Freeman Hospital.

The garden has been designed to be a place of tranquillity with seating carefully positioned to provide little alcoves to sit and reflect in. The living roofs will be extended and planting enhanced to create a peaceful haven with colourful planting to retain interest all year long, provide calming sounds and smells e.g. tall grasses that will blow in wind. It aims to provide a place of rest that is insulated and protected from the rest of the city, where the public can relax in a safe and quiet environment.
