MALHAM TARN ESTATE: RESTORING NATIVE WOODLAND

The restoration of a mosaic of native woodland and scrub to the National Trust’s Malham Tarn Estate is now the highest priority for biodiversity. Much work has already been undertaken to enhance the quality of the important limestone grassland, limestone pavement, blanket bog, wetland and other habitats across the estate. However the long history of heavy livestock grazing in the area has meant that coarser vegetation including scrub and woodland is extremely scarce. Restoration is consequently a real priority that will help achieve a robust, healthy and functioning ecosystem at a large scale.
