Projects / Mary House Vertical Rain Garden

Mary House Vertical Rain Garden

The objective of this project is to create a green wall or vertical rain garden along the side of a residential building, at Queen Caroline Estate in Hammersmith and Fulham. The location forms a central feature for this European funded SuDS demonstration project. Mary House is a three storey residential block on Queen Caroline street, a busy thoroughfare leading to Hammersmith Broadway and close to the famous Hammersmith Apollo. The wall is next to and visible from the community buildings and play space for the estate. This type of green wall is one of the first of it’s kind in London; where rainwater rather than mains will feed the planting. The aim is to create a system that would hold rainwater in times of heavy intense summer storms and irrigate the wall and planting. The construction is a hybrid wall with rain water fed panels, plug planted panels, with climbing plants added at the base of the wall to green a further panel of the vertical rain garden within a steel frame.
