Mere Tun Longhouse Project

WWT Martin Mere is creating a new nature zone that will be the transition zone between the family activities area and the wild nature reserve. This means there is a section of the grounds that will become an accessible nature zone. The Mere Tun village will be a central point to this. The project is to build a thatched Viking longhouse in the village with surrounding meres, streams, beaver dam and interpretation. It will enhance schools’ Living History visits, be open and accessible to all our visitors of all ages and abilities and demonstrate the uses of wetlands through the ages especially in communities that rely on wetlands for food, livelihoods and materials. It will also inform visitors about wetlands’ vital function as carbon sinks to promote how they combat climate change.
