Methods to Reduce the Polluting Potential of Landfills

Landfills have the potential to produce pollution over many hundreds of years. The research will investigate the mechanisms by which the polluting potential of waste can be removed, improving our understanding of the factors affecting the time to reach ‘completion’ (i.e. when the landfill is unlikely to pose a pollution risk). Specifically, the project will investigate (1) how factors like waste composition and depth of landfill influence the flushing and cleanup of wastes within landfills, and (2) the effect of gas generation on fluid flow. In addition, the flushing and cleanup efficiencies of saturated and unsaturated wastes will be compared
