Mickla Bridge Repair Works

Mickla Bridge is a stone footbridge crossing the Cone Brook on the boundary between Alvington and Woolaston parishes in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. The bridge is located at NGR 360812, 199982. Mickla Bridge carries a public right of way (a restricted byway). The bridge is a ‘double clapper’ type footbridge, constructed out of very large slabs of stone resting on a central pillar, it is one of only six known ‘clapper’ type footbridges in the country. In January of this year heavy rainfall caused extensive damage to this bridge. Following a site visit it became clear that urgent repair works were required to protect teh bridge from possible collapse. While the bridge serves a practical function as part of public right of way, it is also a beautiful feature and contributes to public appreciation of the area. The importance of this bridge is highlighted by the recent decision by Englist Heritage to grant the bridge Grade 2 Listed status.
