Miss Cordingley’s Garden

The Friends of Walkden Gardens (FOWG) was formed in 2001 and has since implemented a rolling programme of improvements to widen the access, relevance and appeal of the Gardens.
This land was part of the bequest to Sale Borough Council by Harry Walkden in 1960’s but was used by his niece, Miss Cordingley, until her death.
During the legal process to confirm ownership the land has become overgrown and inaccessible. The aim of this project is to make ‘Miss Cordingley’s Garden’ fully accessible to the community. We will provide mown paths through long grass retaining a young beech and high rhododendron boundaries. The scheme will incorporate an inviting entrance and clear exit. The contribution of Harry Walkden and Miss Cordingley, will be recorded on interpretive signboards. Construction, with the exception of work requiring machinery, will be completed using voluntary community labour.
