Monkland Canal – Connecting the Past to the Future

The project is an integrated package of training, heritage, environment and access improvements that will improve the link between Summerlle Museum of Scottish Industrial Life with the Monkland Canal corridor and the wider environment with Coatbridge and North Lanarkshire.

Specifically the project seeks to:
create a new free visitor attraction at Summerlee by renovating and transforming the Vulcan, which is a replica of the first iron built boat in Scotland currently in a derelict state;
open up, better define and improve a dilapidated and difficult existing route from the museum to Bank Street in Coatbridge; and
improve and enhance access to a public amenity to encourage for local people and visitors to explore the Canal corridor from Summerlee to the Town Centre and beyond.
