Moortown Community Group – Milestone Restoration

The project involves the restoration of an historic milestone located on Harrogate Road, adjacent to the boundary wall of St Gemma’s Hospice. The sandstone milestone is intact but suffering from the effects of the elements over the years. According to the Recorder & Archivist for all milestones in Yorkshire, it is the only remaining original stone from the Leeds to Harrogate Turnpike which came into force around 1750.
