Mount Stewart Demesne Biodiversity Restoration Project

To restore the semi-natural woodlands at Mount Stewart Demesne for the benefit of biodiversity and to protect the endangered red squirrels, of which Mount Stewart has one of the few remaining populations in Northern Ireland. This work will include:

– Removing non-native invasive species such as rhododendron and laurel from semi-natural woodland.
– Re-planting with red squirrel favoured trees such as Scot’s Pine, Norway spruce, and Douglas Fir.
– Ensuring that grey squirrels do not colonise Mount Stewart through habitat management and pest control.
– Raising awareness of red squirrel conservation and woodland management for biodiversity
