My Little Koniks

Project is to establish a new herd of semi-wild Konik ponies to benefit fen habitat management and achieve BAP targets in the Trent Valley Floodplain.

Koniks are well adapted to wetland sites and are ideal vehicles of wet fen management. By grazing coarse grasses and herbs, sedges, rushes and deciduous regrowth, they help suppress scrub encroachment. The result will be a restored/maintained wet fen habitat. Other benefits include enhanced biodiversity of plant and invertebrate species and better ponds which will potentially attract more animal and bird species.
