Nature’s recovery at Helman Tor nature reserve

On Creney Farm (previously used for intensive agriculture), this project will:

1) Restore grassland (preceding woodland) through hay cutting, weed control, and aftermath grazing.
2) Create wetland habitat by decommissioning existing field drains, so the land can hold more water.

On other areas of the reserve (Breney Common, Red Moor and Higher Trevilmick), this project will:

1) Enhance species-rich grassland through green hay spreading and seed broadcasting.
2) Restore heathland habitat by clearing encroaching scrub.
3) Create ‘herbivore highways’ (for butterfly flight paths) and glades for areas of open grassland through
clearance.
4) Improve visitor accessibility by creating a Wilderness Trail (with Biffa Award co-branding), so
communities can explore new areas of the reserve.
5) Improve our understanding of the reserve’s priority species and habitats by training volunteers to carry out surveys for baseline data.
