New floor for Twycross Village Hall

Twycross Village Hall (TVH) in Leicestershire was built in 1933 by villagers using old materials from a school that was demolished on the grounds. The hall is single storey and offers a main hall with stage, kitchen, a recently created children’s room from an old storage area, and toilets.

Regular weekly groups include a twice weekly coffee morning, Pilates and keep fit. A choir use the space fortnightly. The hall is also used for private parties, corporate bookings and music nights.

The hall has undergone little renovation since construction in 92 years ago, and it is cold, draughty and has little insulation. The vented wooden floor is original. Although it has served the community well, the floor is like a jigsaw puzzle, with varying types and colours of wood and screws used to carry out repairs over the years. When it was originally constructed, no sub-floor, insulation or damp proof course was fitted. More recent inspections as part of an independent energy audit revealed that the flooring joists are laid on bare earth, held up by four Land Rover wheels. This is of great concern, and a possible health and safety nightmare.

Biffa Award has been approached to fully fund replacing the floor, which will include the removal of joists, creating a sub-floor foundation, damp proofing, steel reinforced concrete surface and self-levelling latex insulation, finished with rigid-core floor of commercial grade.
