New Tern Islands at Back Saltholme

The project’s objective is to improve and re-create the breeding habitat for amber-listed Common Terns and red-listed Roseate Terns by increasing the size of the existing island and creating an additional island on the Back Saltholme Lake. Additionally, to boost chances of breeding, bespoke nest boxes for Roseate Terns will be placed on the islands alongside a sound broadcaster. Our overarching aim is to advance the conservation status of these two species and their breeding environment on which they depend, which will benefit the wider public and community and raise public understanding and awareness of the conservation of the natural environment.
