Newry Canal Lock No 5 Restoration

The Newry to Portadown canal is an 18 mile long stretch off waterway which was first opened in 1742 as the first summit canal in Britain or Ireland. It ceased operations as a commercial waterways route 60+ years ago and in recent years the canal towpath has been developed for use by walkers and cyclists.
The project proposes to restore one of the Lock Chambers (no 5) just outside Newry city which has fallen into disrepair into an attractive safe feature to be enjoyed by both pedestrians and cyclists.
