Northern Ireland Kites Phase 2

During phase 2, we will employ a Monitoring and Outreach Officer to monitor the red kite population to ensure that it grows to a sustainable level (30 breeding pairs). Dispersal patterns of the red kites will be tracked using radio transmitters and receivers, to gain a through understanding of their behaviour. The project will also deliver red kite themed talks and events in the community and in schools (informal learning) helping to inspire and involve communities. Without monitoring, factors causing a decline such as persecution or disease would not be identified, threatening the formation of a sustainable breeding population. It is also crucial that we ensure that the community is supportive of the project as the birds disperse into the countryside.
