Northfield Compass Stones public art

The green space (formerly a quarry, long since filled in) is grassed over. A recent tree planting project (242122.68) was carried out but apart from this the area is barren of any other features. It is however a popular short cut with residents and dog walkers in the area and as one of the highest points of the city, the full panorama of the city and shire is seen. A number of local residents in the area were keen to showcase this viewpoint with a landmark for the community to take pride in and potentially attract visitors to the area. Northfield Academy intend to further make use of the area as an outdoor classroom, making this into a valuable resource for the school. Budget was found from the area’s Neighbourhood Community Planning budget and four sandstone benches were carved by pupils in Northfield Academy’s XL group and some adult volunteers from the community. These are carved as compass stones and the imagery relates to the heritage of the area and links to the direction of each compass stone.
