Nottingham Friends Meeting House – Roof Repairs

The wooden domed roof over the meeting room has become structurally unsound. The glue which holds together its layers has lost adhesion, so that the dome is flattening, pushing outwards the tops of the high level windows. Dry and wet rot have been found in the dome. The flat roof covering the rest of the building needs re-covering every 15 years. The proposal is to remove the dome, and re-roof the whole building with a double-pitched roof, the upper section over the meeting room, and the lower section over the present flat roof. Vertical windows between the two pitches will admit natural lighting to the meeting room which will have a level white ceiling, maximising light and removing the acoustic problem. The new roof will incorporate a heat exchanger in the ventilation system for energy efficiency, and will have better insulation. Other works include damp-proofing and modernising of the toilets
