Projects / Peat Restoration on Summit of Pendle Hill

Peat Restoration on Summit of Pendle Hill

The principle aim of the project is to restore the eroded peat hags and bare peat on 20Ha of Pendle Hill. The Pendle Hill is easily accessible and a popular destination for seasoned and recreational walkers and fell runners. It is estimated around 160,000 people visited the summit each year. The restoration will be done by blocking erosion channels reprofiling the peat hags and replanting with moorland vegetation such as cotton grass and heather to stabilize the peat. Alongside the peat landscape restoration there will be repairs to drystone walls, stone pitching to the summit viewpoint and repairs to the most popular footpath to the summit. The project will utilise the public on conservation volunteer days to help with all aspect of the restoration works. This project is one part of a larger 3yr Pendle Hill Landscape Partnership Scheme funded in part by Heritage Lottery Fund.
