Peatscapes – pilot restoration project

Peatscapes is a new collaborative project that aims to conserve and enhance the internationally important peatland resource within the North Pennines Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Peatlands in the North Pennines have been drained with drainage ‘grips’ over the past century and Peatscapes will restore an area of drained peat using a grip blocking method whichi will re-wet an area in County Durham. This restoration project will be a high profile effort that will demonstrate the importance of peatlands to water quality, quantity and important habitats in the UK.
