Projects / Pentwyn Farm Meadows

Pentwyn Farm Meadows

This project aims to improve both the extent and quality of a set of four exceptional, SSSI designated species rich hay meadows as well as an area of grassland restoration (covering a further five fields) on the Pentwyn Farm nature reserve. The project will have a particular focus on field margin management; given the typically small size and medieval layout of this farm, the boundaries have a disproportionate affect on the grassland quality and densely planted shelter belts, woodland areas and overgrown hedges are shading out grassland habitat reducing both quality and extent. A number of other habitat prescriptions such as wildflower seed harvesting and sowing will be aimed at bringing habitat improvements across the reserve.

The project is working towards key LBAP and UKBAP targets for lowland meadows and is strongly supported by the local council and the Countryside Council for Wales.
