Pond Extensions (Enlargement of Existing Ponds), Newton-le-Willows Angler’s Association

This is a project for the enlargement of two fishponds at the Lyme & Wood landfill site at Haydock in St Helens. The ponds are known as the Private and Figure of Eight Fishponds. It is aimed to create ponds that are of ecological benefit to coarse fishing. Fishing platforms (pegs) will be installed, along with vehicular and pedestrian access. There will be provision for disabled users including suitable surfacing and specially designed pegs.Benefits include: enable local people who live in the housing estates adjacent to the site to have access to fishing; enable youngsters with little choice of leisure activity to learn a new sport; bring small ponds that have previously suffered from neglect and vandalism into beneficial use; bring ponds under the management of competent fishery managers; improve the ecology of ponds and their margins and increase the diversity of species that they support.
